The Fuss About Fornication

From a Christian standpoint, it is not a sin to have sex with someone you love and have decided to spend the rest of your life with only because the union has not been sanctioned in a marriage registry or some traditional marital rites have not been performed. Neither the government through the marriage registry nor some traditional marital rites should dictate the direction of godliness. Biblically, fornication (“porneia” in Greek) does not imply pre-marital sex as the concept of “pre-marital sex” is a creation of misinterpreters of the Bible. Fornication imply non-marital sex and sexual intercourse is the only original act by which a marriage is validated. Therefore, there cannot be any concept called pre-marital sex.

For a Christian to be guilty of fornication (non-marital sex), he must have had sex with someone he never intended to have a lifelong commitment to. In summation, fornication constitutes an act of having sexual intercourse with someone you are not intending to be with for the rest of your life. It does not constitute having sex with someone to whom you intend to have a perpetual commitment prior to a ceremony known as wedding in a marriage registry, church or family gathering. The marital events at registries, churches and during performance of traditional marital rites (such as payment of brideprice or dowry) are mere artificiality; human creations that should not bear on biblical interpretations especially anti-fornication doctrine.
