Taraba council polls: PDP sweeps all 16 LGs

The chairmanship and councillorship elections for all the local government councils conducted on Tuesday were adjudged hitch-free while the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in all the 16 councils.

Our correspondent who monitored the election in Takum reports that the election was hitch-free, orderly and peaceful.

Hon. Shiban Tikari won in Takum Local Government, the hometown of Gov. Darius Ishaku, while Danièl Adi won in Wukari local government.

The security arrangement was adequate and the election materials were provided in good time.

The election also witnessed a large turnout of eligible voters who cast their votes without any form of molestation or acrimony as was the case in previous elections.

In an interview with Independent, the Chief of staff Government House Administration, Hon. Istifanus Gbana, attributed the success of the polls to the determination of the people to vote in the candidates of their choice and the aggressive plan to that effect carried out by the government of Darius Ishaku.

Istifanus Gbana, who described the election as a litmus test for other elections, advised other states to emulate the example of Taraba State in any election by being law-abiding.

“I will attribute the success of the election of the voting of chairmen and counsellors in all the 16 local government areas to good planning. The state was fully prepared for the election and therefore left no stone unturned by making available relevant logistics which were well utilized by the various agencies concerned.

“Besides, the governor ensured that no thuggery, no violence, no abuses and other things that would cause people to lose their lives and properties.

“The success of this thing you have seen is as a result of the goodwill of the people and government’s determination to make sure that we do not involve people losing their lives and property. With this election, democracy has finally come to stay provided other parts of the country would not hesitate to borrow a leaf from the government of Taraba state in conducting peaceful election devoid of crisis,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Gov. Darius Dickson Ishaku alongside his wife Bar. Ann Ishaku, cast their votes at Gawetun ward in Takum local government.

The former chairmen were on caretaker capacity for the past two years which according to keen observers is unhealthy for the system.
