Mob sets truck ablaze after crushing man to death in Anambra

A Dangote truck driver today escaped being lynched by the whiskers after his truck crushed an unidentified man to death, near Zenith Bank, Upper Iweka branch, along Owerri-Onitsha expressway.

The fatal road traffic crash occurred Tuesday afternoon when the truck without a registration number, slid out of its lane due to excessive speeding and crushed a pedestrian who is well known in the community.

It was also gathered that another wheelbarrow pusher in the area, was fatally injured in the crash and had been taken to the hospital.

Eyewitnesses said some angry youths took revenge immediately by setting the truck ablaze when the driver ran away for fear of his life.

When TNC correspondent arrived the scene at about 1pm, FRSC rescue team from Upper Iweka Outpost who had mobilized for rescue operations were intercepted by the angry youths who took the corpse of the victim away.

The major expressway was also blocked, causing serious gridlock, as the angry youths protested the death of the victim who was said to be popular in the area.

Reacting to the development, the Acting Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, Kamal Musa, confirmed the death and the dispersal of FRSC operatives who came to do their legitimate job at the scene.

He, however, expressed the condolences of the Sector Commander of the FRSC, Andrew Kumapayi to the deceased family and advised pedestrians to always use the pedestrian bridges where available.

He also gave a strong warning to motorists especially truck drivers to abide by the stipulated speed limits in built-up areas to avoid unnecessary road traffic Crashes.
