Manchester City disclose the acquisition of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United

English champions Manchester City today disclosed the acquisition of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United. The 26-year-old completed his club switch in a deal of €45m plus add-ons. Kalvin becomes City’s third summer acquisition following the arrival of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, Stefan Ortega and Julian Alvarez. The English defensive midfielder will wear the iconic number 4 worn formerly by Vincent Kompany.

A Leeds United academy graduate, Phillips made his first-team debut in 2015. In the 2019–20 season, Phillips was a member of the Leeds team coached by Marcelo Bielsa that won the Championship. Following this season, Phillips made his international debut for the England national team and was part of the England team that finished runner-up at UEFA Euro 2020.

Kalvin Phillips will wear the No.4 shirt at Manchester City. The England midfielder became the Club’s third signing of the summer on Monday when he put pen to paper on a six-year deal which keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the 2027/28 season.

“It was a number that was presented to me, and I thought because, at Leeds, I had 23 which is one of my favourite numbers, I felt like because it’s a new start I wanted a different number and to try to build a legacy on that number,” said Phillips.

Hopefully, I can.”
