INEC Makes U-Turn, Names Soludo APGA Governorship Candidate For Anambra Election

Awka – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday in its list of candidates for the 2021 Anambra Governorship election scheduled for the 6th of November, 2021, published the name of Prof Chukwuma Soludo as the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA for the governorship election.

The statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee of the INEC, Festus Okoye also published the name of Dr Onyeka Ibezi as the APGA Deputy Governorship Candidate.

The Commission revealed that it was served with the judgement of the Court of Appeal (Kano Division), which set aside the judgement of the High Court of Jigawa State on the leadership of APGA and the nomination of its candidates for the Anambra Governorship election.

The INEC had in its list published late July, recognized Chief Chukwuma Umeoji and Professor Lilian Orogbu as the Governorship and Deputy Governorship of APGA, respectively.

The statement read; “The Commission met today Thursday 19th August, 2021 and deliberated on a number of issues, including the nomination of candidates for the Anambra Governorship election holding on the 6th of November, 2021.

“The Timetable and Schedule of Activities approved by the Commission on the 18th of January, 2021, provides for the withdrawal/substitution of candidates in line with Sec. 35 of the Electoral Act 2010 (As Amended). Accordingly, by the deadline of 30th of July, 2021 fixed by the Commission, seven Governorship and eleven Deputy Governorship candidates were substituted out of the eighteen political parties.”

INEC however said the final list of candidates will be published on the 7th of October, 2021, as provided in the Timetable an Schedule of Activities for the election.
