Igbo Highlife Legend Morroco is dead

Legendary highlife musician, Chief Dr. Emeka Morocco Maduka has died at the age of 76.

The Governor, Performing Musicians of Nigeria (PMAN), Anambra State Chapter, Ikem Mazeli disclosed the news to TNC correspondent in Anambra on Friday.

In his words; Morrocco (as he was fondly called) passed on Thursday, October 29th, 2020. All other arrangements as regards his planting to mother earth will be communicated to all of us later.”

On the 6th of March 2020,  a two-day musical concert tagged ‘60 Years on Stage of Chief Dr. Emeka Morocco Maduka’ kicked off in Awka and climaxed at Onitsha the next day.

The historic concert was organised by Morocco  Maduka Global Fans Club to mark his 76th birthday.

Fielding questions at the event, the acclaimed King of Ekpili music said “I will retire when I clock 80. I am now 76 years old and when I clock 80, I will celebrate my birthday and then retire. That’s one of the plans I have.”

Chief Morocco Maduka will be remembered for his legendary hits popular among which were ‘Asili 98, Osisi oma, Ife Oma, Ubanesse, Uwa Ezuoke, Ife onye g’abu ka o g’abulili’ among others.

The highlife maestro who is from Ukwulu in Dunukofia Council Area of Anambra State, has a total of 120 albums to his credit.
