“I shot him accidentally,” Policeman who killed Anambra Okada Rider confesses

Awka – The Officer responsible for shooting and killing of an Okada operator, Ebele Nwaogha, aged 28years at Igboukwu in Aguata Council Area of Anambra State, on the 15th of December last year, is presently in detention.

TNC correspondent uncovered this on Thursday when he visited the state CID, Awka yesterday, to inquire on the matter, during which he was made to see the culprit.

The incident took place at Ngo Igboukwu at Akuka Junction, Nkwo Market, on 15th December, 2020.

The killing had sparked protests that resulted in the initial burning of Igboukwu and Ekwulobia police stations, in charge of the area.

Since the incident happened late last year, questions have been asked as to the whereabouts of the culprit, with some believing he had been allowed to go scot-free.

During the visit to the police formation, the Police officer whose name was withheld by the authorities, in a chat with our correspondent, admitted firing the shot.

He however said the bullet he shot into the air accidentally came down and hit the victim.

“It is true that I fired the shot but it was intended at him. I was only trying to sound a warning but unfortunately, the bullet him at a vital point. I sincerely regret my actions,” he pleaded.

Further speaking with our correspondent on the matter, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the culprit had been in police custody, undergoing internal disciplinary procedure of the Force since the incident.

He described the report that the culprit has been freed as untrue, malicious and the handiwork of persons hell-bent on misinforming and misleading the public, to cause mischief and incite the public against the Police.

“The outcome of the investigations would be made public in due course.

“The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Monday Kuryas warns the originators and peddlers of this unfounded rumour to desist forthwith, as they would not be spared if apprehended.

“He also urges the public to disregard the report and further assured them that justice would be served on the matter,” Ikenga concluded.
