Gunmen Attack Anambra Community, Kill Three Including Traffic Warden

Three persons have been allegedly gunned down by gun-wielding men Tuesday morning at Ekwulobia roundabout, Ekwulobia in Aguata Council Area of Anambra State.

The gunmen were said to have arrived the popular roundabout, shooting sporadically and killing three persons in the process.

An eyewitness told TNC correspondent that it was not yet clear if the men were armed robbers, cultists or bandits operating in the guise of unknown gunmen as they have come to be known.

The source said one of the deceased persons, was a male official of the Anambra Traffic Management Agency (ATMA), identified as Chinedu, who was controlling traffic at the ever busy Ekwulobia junction.

He was shot from behind, as online videos showed, with bullet shattering his brain.

When TNC correspondent contacted the Anambra state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, he said some hoodlums in an attempt to disarm a mobile Police officer on patrol started shooting sporadically.

He said the Mobile Police Officer returned the fire immediately, engaged the hoodlums which made the gun men flee the scene, saying he does not have any information as to whether anyone died from the incident.

“The Anambra State Police Command today has embarked on a robust patrol around the state with the aim to apprehend suspected hoodlums sighted along Ekwulobia- Umunze road this morning.

“The Patrol has a comprehensive Operational asset of the command which comprises of Mobile Police Operatives, Counter terrorist unit, Special forces, conventional police officers and among others

“Preliminary Information reveals that along Umunze road this morning, the hoodlums in attempt to disarm a mobile Police officer on patrol, started shooting sporadically.

“The Mobile Police Officer returned the fire immediately, engaged the hoodlums which made the gun men flee the scene.

“Meanwhile, calm has returned in the area and further details shall be communicated please,” Ikenga concluded.

Meanwhile, the ATMA Commander, Pat Obiefuna when contacted on phone, confirmed that one of the deceased was his men, wondering why a government official on legitimate duty will be targeted as such.

“How much is that officer that he would be slain like that even while on duty.

“It is a pity,” he lamented.
