Not less than fifty women from Enugwu-Agidi, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, have been trained on production of detergents and disinfectants for personal and commercial use.
The training focused on aspects of cosmetology including antiseptic and liquid soaps and bleach.
The training, courtesy of a non-governmental organization, Ogazi Foundation, is part of the Foundation’s support to the government in empowering citizens for self reliance.
The Founder of The Ogazi Foundation, Dr. Chidi Okoye, in his remarks, made it clear that the training has no political attachment.
According to him, it is only a selfless contribution undertaken to support women in the just concluded Women’s August meeting.
“The training will be extended to any community, as will be suggested by members of the Organizing committee of the Foundation. Overall, the target are those women in the hinterlands who need skills to move from their present unfavorable economic condition to a better pedestal. The foundation is committed to these kind of initiatives and will not relent,” he said.
A resource person at the event and a member of the Foundation, Mrs Praise Okonkwo, who took time to explain to the participants, rudiments of cosmetology, said successful participants at the event will be able to use proceeds to assist in their various family upkeeps, especially now that COVID-19 has negatively affected the economy of many families.
She enjoined women, regardless of age and class, to embrace skills acquisition, in order to support the menfolk, since multiple sources of income is the way to go presently.
“We are in an unusual period where the finances of families have been negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Many have lost their means of livelihood. It therefore made a lot of sense for the Ogazi Foundation to think in the line of empowering our women to be self reliant. It is also anticipated that when they start producing these items, they should be able to support their families, cushion the harsh effects of the pandemic,” she said.
Some participants, including Mrs Charity Chidozie, Nonyelum Okoye, and Felicia Okafor, who expressed delight over the empowerment programme, said it will go a long way in repositioning economic status of their various families.
They thanked the Foundation for championing the interest of the masses, calling on the wealthy to help in extending the gestures to more people, in order to address restiveness in the society.
