The thing with humans is that we can all make snap judgments, especially when meeting someone for the first time. I mean, you could meet someone for the first and in less than thirty seconds, our brain processes information about the person’s face—which leads to quick conclusions about the person’s qualities, including their trustworthiness, competency, friendliness, honesty and morality.

You see the old saying that “Never getting a second chance to make a first impression?” It is still very true. And the good news is that you don’t have to be the smartest or the most attractive, or finest to make a mark on the people you get to know. There are people who have all these qualities naturally. But, there are those who have to work on some skills to make a positive first impression.

Below are some tips that will make people you meet remember you with a positive impression. It doesn’t matter if it is a job interview or a first date, the following tips would really be of help.

  1. Smile and be nice

When meeting someone for the first time, a smile goes a long way in creating a long lasting impression of being friendly and approachable. Frowning your face would only give the person the impression that you are not approachable and they should keep their distance. So, learn how to smile often when you are meeting someone for the first time. Even if it is a job interview, the moment you step inside the office, smile.

No matter who are talking or listening to, always focus on making eye contact. Aside the fact that the eyes are the mirror of the soul, keeping an eye contact with the person you are talking to has a way of showing security in your person and interest in the other. When you keep looking everywhere during a conversation, it can be perceived as rude.

Having a balanced conversation means that you should listen as much as you speak. Don’t monopolize the conversation. Even though you might want to talk about yourself, don’t yap endlessly. Make room for the other person to talk. You might ask the other person questions about themselves and be sure to actively listen to the answer.

When you are meeting someone for the person, whether it is a date or a job interview, it is always advisable to make it on time. If you show up late or miss the appointment without a valid reason, it can only give the person the impression that you are unreliable and irresponsible.

Your dressing speaks volumes when you are meeting a person for the first time. Although the way you should dress depends largely on the person you are meeting or the place you are going to – but you should always choose the perfect outfit that will leave a positive impression. If the situation dictates the need for a professional look make sure you look clean, well-dressed, and appropriate for the occasion. Always remember that you should dress according to the occasion.
