“Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limit of the world” – Arthur Schopenhauer

Hey friends, hope you are all doing well. I recently noticed the inconsistency in our weather conditions. Like the seasons are all messed up these days, and I wonder if it is as a result of ozone layer depletion. Should we pay more attention to the environmentalists among us or simply ignore the obvious?

I promised to share my favorite quotes by Fiorello H. La Guardia but I do rather share one weekly in order to maintain the structure of our weekly quotes. Do bear with me, at least I will still keep my word right? Here is one,“The devil is easy to identify. He appears when you are terribly tired and makes a very reasonable request which you know you shouldn’t grant”. Have a good read.

PHILOSOPHY QUOTES

“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest”.

Elie Wiesel

“Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric”.

Bertrand Russell

“I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think”.

Socrates

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man”.

George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman

“A truth that is told with bad intent beats all the lies you can ever invent”.

William Blake, Auguries of Innocence

PSYCHOLOGY QUOTES

“Sometimes people hold a core belief that is very strong. When they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable called cognitive dissonance. And because it is so important to protect the core belief, they will rationalize, ignore and even deny anything that doesn’t fit in with the core belief”.

Frantz Fanon, Black Skin, White Masks

“A person who has not been completely alienated, who has remained sensitive and able to feel, who has not lost the sense of dignity, who is not yet ‘for sale’, who can still suffer over the suffering of others, who has not acquired fully the having mode existence-briefly, a person who has remained a person and not a thing – cannot help feeling lonely, powerless, isolated in present-day society. He cannot help doubting himself and his own convictions, if not his sanity. He cannot help suffering, even though he can experience moments of joy and clarity that are absent in the life of his ‘normal’ contemporaries. Not rarely will he suffer from neurosis that results from the situation of a sane man living in an insane society, rather than that of the more conventional neurosis of a sick man trying to adapt himself to a sick society. In the process of going further in his analysis, i.e. of growing to greater independence and productivity, his neurotic symptoms will cure themselves”.

Erich Fromm, The Art of Being

“The human race is a monotonous affair. Most people spend the greatest part of their time working in order to live, and what little freedom remains so fills them with fear that they seek out any and every means to be rid of it”.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, The sorrows of Young Werther

“For after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable – what then?”.

George Orwell, 1984

“I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail”.

Abraham Maslow, Toward a Psychology of Being

SELF HELP QUOTES

“There is no need to search; achievement leads to nowhere. It makes no difference at all, so just be happy now! Love is the only reality of the world, because it is all one, you see. And the only laws are paradox, humor and change. There is no problem, never was, and never will be. Release your struggle, let go of your mind, throw away your concerns, and relax into the world. No need to resist life, just do your best. Open your eyes and see that you are far more than you imagine. You are the world, you are the universe; you are yourself and everyone else, too! It’s all the marvelous play of God. Wake up, regain your humor. Don’t worry, just be happy. You are already free!”.

Dan Millman, Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives

“Learn to deal with the fact that you are not a perfect person but you are a person that deserves respect and honesty”.

Pandora Poikilos, Excuse Me, My Brains Have Stepped Out

“The true measure of success is how many times you can bounce back from failure”.

Stephen Richards

“Don’t blow off another’s candle for it won’t make yours shine brighter”.

Jaachynma N.E. Agu, The Prince and the Pauper

“We do not get to choose how we start out in life. We do not get to choose the day we were born or the family we are born into, what we are named at birth, what country we are born in, and we do not get to choose our ancestry. All these things are predetermined by a higher power. By the time you are old enough to start making decisions for yourself, a lot of things in your life are already in place. It’s important, therefore, that you focus on the future, the things that you can change”.

IdowuKoyenikan, Wealth for All: Living a Life of Success at the Edge of Your Ability

SPIRITUALITY QUOTES

“One thing: you have to walk, and create the way by walking; you will not find a ready-made path. It is not cheap, to reach to the ultimate realization of truth. You will have to create the path by walking yourself; the path is not ready-made, lying there and waiting for you.it is just like the sky: the birds fly, but they don’t leave any footprints. You cannot follow them; there are no footprints left behind”.

Osho

“I never liked jazz music because jazz doesn’t resolve. But I was outside the Bagdad theatre in Portland one night when I saw a man playing the saxophone. I stood there for fifteen minutes, and he never opened his eyes. After that I liked jazz music. Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself. It is as if they are showing you the way. I used to not like God because God didn’t resolve. But that was before any of this happened”.

Donald Miller, Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality

“my religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals Himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind”.

Albert Einstein

“The moment God is figured out with nice neat lines and definitions, we are no longer dealing with God”.

Rob Bell, Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith

“A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, and must empty ourselves. Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your weakness”.

Mother Teresa

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free;

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;

Where words come out from the depths of truth;

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;

Where the mind is led forward by thee into the ever-widening thought and action;

Into that Heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake”.

Rabindranath Tagore, Gitanjali
