Enugu – A non governmental organization, the Northern Youth Progressive Forum (NYPF), has awarded Dr George Ugwu, Executive Secretary of Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENS-PHCDA) with ` Garkuwar Matasan Arewa’ award.

Garkuwar Matasan Arewa means Pillar of Hope to the Nigerian Youth.

Unveiling the award on Sunday, the Vice President of NYPF, Mr Abdulmalik Jamil, said the forum, with active membership in 19 northern states and FCT, found Ugwu worthy of the award due to his leadership qualities in the health sector.

According to Jamil, the NGO, which holds ideals of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, feels the award was also in recognition of his selfless services to mankind and successful contributions towards nation-building.

“The Garkuwar Matasan Arewa award, which is part of the prestigious Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Platinum Award, is in recognition and appreciation of Dr George Ugwu’s immense contributions to medical advance in Nigeria.

“The award is also for Ugwu’s immeasurable contributions to youth empowerment, philanthropy, service to God, humanity and country,’’ he said.

Responding, Ugwu dedicated the award to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his motivation and support to ENS-PHCDA to be able to contribute to the health and wellbeing of the people especially those in remote areas.

According to him, “I am surprised that the quiet and little things the Agency is doing is being noticed even beyond this state.

“I had started my passion for leadership; empowerment and services for the less privileged and vulnerable group during my school days and this award will definitely push me to continue.

“I am pledging to utilize every opportunity and capacity available to me to serve and contribute to nation-building.

“On behalf of myself, my family, ENS-PHCDA and Enugu State, I thank the organisation for the award and recognition of what Enugu State is doing through the Agency,’’ he said.
