EEDC Mum Over Staff Electrocuted In Onitsha, Days After Incident

3 Days after a middle-aged man, identified as Morris Nonyia, was electrocuted at Ojedi street by Mbah junction, Inland town Onitsha, Anambra State, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, says it is yet to receive an official report on the incident.
TNC correspondent who investigated the matter, gathered that the victim, who was certified dead by a medical doctor, and deposited at the General hospital mortuary in Onitsha, was an Operation Technician at EEDC office, GRA, Onitsha.
It was also gathered that the deceased, who hailed from Inyi, Oji River, Enugu State, was said to have gained promotion in office recently, after weeklong training in Enugu.
He was said to be working at EEDC installations in Ojedi street, Inland town Onitsha on Monday, when electric power supply was restored, leading to his instant death.
An acquaintance of the deceased whose identity is withheld said the deceased came with his colleagues and when the electrocution started, they left him and ran away.
“After the current threw him off the ladder, the colleagues came, took their ladder and stole away because it was gathered that they went on illegal duties. I intend to visit the station and know what is happening. I don’t know why they are trying to sweep the matter under the carpet. I want to know why they had to restore supply when they have their workers working in those areas,” she said.
When contacted, the Head of Communications, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Eze, promised to enquire about the incident and revert to our Correspondent.
It would be recalled that while reacting to similar incident in the past, Mr. Eze had warned that electricity is a hazard, maintaining that qualified staff of EEDC are always advised to observe safety measures while working on electrical installations.
Efforts to speak with the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, on the incident has not been successful as at the time of filing this report.
