Deeper Life High School Sexual Abuse: Udom Lands in Cover-up Scandal

The Udom Emmanuel administration in Akwa Ibom State appears to be currently entangled with the Deeper Life High School sexual abuse scandal, and is doing everything humanly possible to cover-up the mess.

Insiders say the administration has been under intense pressure from interest groups over how it’s going about the probe of the alleged molestation of an 11-year old male student of the Deeper Life school in Uyo, the state capital.

Interest groups, among them, Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), United Nations Special rapporteur on human trafficking and the police are said to be frowning at the method employed by the Udom administration in investigating the sexual molestation of the student by his seniors in the school.

Mother of the student, Deborah Okezie in a video which she posted online raised the alarm over the incident demanding justice and a thorough investigation into the messy Deeper Life school affair.

In a series of video clips, Okezie made damning allegations about mishandling the investigation that was promptly ordered by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Head of the probe panel who happens to be the state Commissioner for Education, Enobong Mbobo, seems to be carrying out the assignment in a manner that clearly shows that she is biased.

Mother of the molested student had previously accused the commissioner of threatening her life for daring to insist on justice being transparently done on the scandalous Deeper Life school affair.

She has also alleged that the commissioner had ordered her to pull down the video because it was painting the image of her office and that of the state government in a bad light.

Announcing the withdrawal of the state government from the investigation, an official, Ini Ememobong in a statement says the Udom administration took the decision in “the interest of several international organisations.”

The statement claims that while the investigation was on going, Attorney General of the state notified the embattled education commissioner of the concurrent investigation of the same matter by the police and the interest of several international organisations like the United Nations Special rapporteur on Human Trafficking, Mirabelle Center, FIDA Akwa Ibom, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Response Unit of the state Ministry of Justice, among others.

“It was therefore advisable for the commissioner to hands off the investigation, and allow the police, which is the proper government agency to handle allegations of crime, to take over.

“The medical report from the private hospital where the child had been taken for examination and treatment by his parents has been received, while the child has been taken for further medical investigations at the Agape Sexual referral Center, with the consent of the parents and all interested parties.

“The State Government is committed to the revelation of the truth of the circumstance and is determined to prosecute anybody found culpable of any wrongdoing.

“At no time did the commissioner or any staff of the state government, harass or intimidate the parent or the affected student, or anybody connected to the matter.

“We appeal to the public to exercise patience for a thorough investigation to be carried out by the Police and other relevant institutions on the matter. The state government will upon receipt of the reports take necessary actions thereto.”

Interestingly, new revelations are emerging that other students had been allegedly abused in the same Deeper Life school.
