Congratulations #Naija, We Came FIRST!

I was having a somewhat awkward day when the monumental news broke earlier this week. Upon getting the notification, I took to several websites to confirm the alluring development – the headlines were screaming and riveting – Nigeria was SPELT in GOLD. The news was enough to paint the country red, it was enough for President Muhammadu Buhari to declare national celebration – I mean, to take FIRST position amid all the countries in the world is no small feat. BUT UNFORTUNATELY, it was a first position for the wrong reason – shameful enough to plunge our faces in the mud!

The world leading pornographic company, PornHub had sometime this week, released a list of viewers and subscribers from Top 25 countries across the globe that patronize their products and remarkably, NIGERIA came FIRST – Yes, Nigeria was ranked first!

I looked at the ranking carefully and the first thought that came to me was a people who are morally bankrupt, spiritually dead, yet hypocritically religious! Nigeria is arguably the most religious nation in the world – with churches planted at every nook and crannies of the nation, Mosques at every strategic centre, yet her people have been ranked and exposed as the greatest consumers of pornography – your goodness!

Who are those watching porn as exposed by the ranking? Are they not Christians and Muslims? Are they not the people who stand before God to raise Holy Hands while singing sonorous songs? Are they not the people who dress in their best regalia to show off in Churches? Are they not the people who wash their feet and pray five times a day? Are they not the people who fill religious houses day-in-day-out?

It’s not enough that ‘knacking’ has become the norm among unmarried people in the society, consuming the anomalies of others has also become the norm? You go to church/mosque to shout the loudest amen and return home to feed your eyes, body, soul and spirit with porn! You see one of the reasons why God is far from us? Can we now see the monumental hypocrisy that is among us!

In recent times, when I go to church and hear Preachers harp on prosperity, I get angry in my spirit because it appears that most of these preachers are either afraid of losing their members – thereby telling them what will excite them or they are ignorant of what is obtainable in the society. People have gone morally bankrupt, righteousness is gradually going on extinction – yet our Pastors and Imams cannot see! How can a nation where almost everybody is either a Christian or Muslim emerge the major consumer of porn!?

And then, you look down the list and can but shake head for Africa – African countries occupy topmost positions with Ghana and Kenya sitting comfortably in 2nd and 3rd positions. North African countries Egypt and Morocco where about 90 per cent of their citizens are Muslims came fourth and fifth respectively to complete the Top Five. Africa has become a dumping ground for all anomalies – white people create these pornographic movies and give Africa to consume – yet, Africa is arguably the most religious continent in the world. Where do we go from here?

At this point, the handwriting on the wall has become very clear – anomalies have been proven the new normal – the fear of God is becoming obsolete and some of us who are looking through the lens of righteousness are weeping – I am not sure of what to advise because it appears that most people have been given to reprobate minds but I am challenging us to awake to righteousness, strive to know God and stop sinning.
