Building Construction to Commence in Anambra Smart City First Quarter 2021

Awka – Building development in the Awka Millennium City Project (AMC), is to commence by first quarter of 2021, Chimmy Ogbuebile, Chief Executive Officer, Awka Millennium City Development Company has said.
Ogbuebile was speaking on Tuesday at the signing of N1.747bn contract for the 2nd Phase of Awka Millennium City internal roads with Sagez Nig. Ltd.
The Awka Millennium City Project is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative between Anambra State Government and MP Infrastructure, for the development of a world class smart city in Awka for residential and commercial purposes.
A product of a Memorandum of Understanding between the government and the developer, signed on the 19th of June, last year, the project sits on about a 100-hectare of land in Anambra State Capital City of Awka.
Commissioner for Housing, Architect Mike Okonkwo who represented Anambra State Government at the ceremony, explained that the project is an outcome of the implementation strategy of the Willie Obiano administration for effective housing development in the state, through partnership with the private sector.
According to him, the project is envisioned to set an example of what is achievable under the PPP arrangement and is expected to set the model for future engagements in the Housing Sector.
“This is a promise made and promise kept by Governor Obiano and we are happy that the project is already moving at the expected pace,” he said.
The Managing Director, Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA), Jide Ikeakor, said the project aims to deliver world class housing infrastructure in Anambra that will be comparable to those in developed countries of the world.
He commended the investor for heeding the ‘Think Home’ call by the state government, urging other well meaning citizens of the state to borrow a leaf from him.
Ogbuebile, the Chief Executive Officer of the company developing the project, said despite the challenges which the world has faced in 2020 with COVID-19, and the economic downturn which has now led to a recession in the last quarter of 2020, the company has maintained steady progress of work on site.
He revealed that the company is about completing 1.9 kilometres of world class dual carriage roads, having completed the construction of covered drainages and walkways.
“The TCN Access Road, AMC Avenue and AMC Boulevard have also all nearly been completed, and in record time of 3 months.
“In the next week, we would have completed a total of over 2.34km of dual carriage road at a total investment cost of N1.32B.
“Our continued commitment to providing world class infrastructure in Awka Millennium City has brought us here today. We are delighted that you all could join us to witness the official contract signing ceremony for the N1.747B construction of 2nd phase of internal roads in the estate totalling 5.81 kilometres. The contract will be delivered in 9 months,” he disclosed.
Ogbuebile also spoke on the N2.7B investment in estate utility services, procurement process for water Infrastructure equipment, water tanks, treatment plants, pipes and pumps, adding that they are also procuring underground power equipment, cables, substations, transformers, switchgear and other utility infrastructure.
“We have approval of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for a dedicated 32kv line from the Agu Awka Substation for AMC to ensure regular power supply to the estate.
“I will like to thank the various AMC subscribers that kept faith with us slightly over a year ago, when we started the project as a thick forest but still subscribed to the Awka Milenium City vision, and wish to reassure them that as promised then, we are quite on course to delivering timely on the project,” he assured.
In a remark, the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa said the agency will follow through the construction phase in terms of technical support, to ensure that the project is executed in compliance with the best standards in construction practice.
